Lusa

Germany has a total of 192,556 cases of covid-19 diagnosed since the start of the pandemic, with an increase of 477 in the last 24 hours, and a drop in the contagion rate to 0.59.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) there are 8,948 fatalities, another 21 in the last 24 hours, and 300 new cases considered cured for a total of 177,100.

The estimated rate of reproduction of the virus, or “R” factor, which determines the contagion, fell from 0.72 to 0.59.

The state of Bavaria remains the one with the most cases (48,202) and fatalities (2,594). North Rhine-Westphalia follows with the second highest number of infected people, 42,150, a region that has two confined areas at this time.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed nearly 484,000 deaths and infected more than 9.5 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1,549 people out of 40,415 confirmed as infected died, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
