Germany has received the first doses of the monkeypox vaccine ordered through the European Union. The delivery was made possible by the new EU health crisis prevention authority HERA.

HERA was able to react quickly and buy the vaccines for the member states, according to the European Commission in Brussels. The first delivery for Germany involves approximately 5300 doses. In mid-June, the EU ordered around 110,000 doses, which are now gradually being distributed to Member States, as well as Norway and Iceland. The virus has also appeared in the Netherlands, but there are enough vaccines in stock, which is why the Netherlands did not participate in the group purchase.

More than a thousand monkey pox infections have now been counted in Germany. The German authorities recommend vaccination for risk groups and persons who have close contact with infected persons.

As far as is known, the actually rare viral disease, of which several thousand cases have been reported worldwide, is mainly transmitted through close physical contact between people. According to the World Health Organization, the vast majority of those affected are men who have sex with men. But anyone can get infected.
