A full alarm was sounded in the university city of Heidelberg in Germany, with a large-scale police action on Monday afternoon.
A man is said to have shot and injured several people in an auditorium at the University of Heidelberg near Mannheim in southern Germany.
It is not known how many are injured and how serious the injuries are.
According to German police, the suspected perpetrator must be dead.
Lecture hall
The attack must have taken place in a lecture hall and must have taken place with a rifle. Heidelberg University is one of Germany’s oldest and most recognized universities.
According to the German newspaper world a man entered a lecture hall at the university around 12.35. He is then said to have shot at several of those present with a rifle, in some cases they are said to have been seriously injured. Sources tell Welt that the perpetrator first fled and the police searched for him.
The suspected perpetrator was found dead shortly afterwards.
According to sources at the news agency dpa he was a student at the university.
Neuenheimer Feld – where the faculties of science and parts of the university hospital at Heidelberg University are mainly located – is blocked off, writes image.
Police are still on the scene with special forces and are continuing searches in the area. But according to Bild, the police do not believe that there are other perpetrators.
