Germany-Hungary | UEFA EURO 2020: Germany v Hungary facts | UEFA EURO 2020

Hungary have a good record against Germany and have won two of their last three games in Germany before the last matchday in Group F in Munich.

• After three games without a defeat in Germany, the Hungarians had to accept another bankruptcy in the last duel five years ago, but in terms of EURO performance, the differences could hardly be greater. While Germany reached the knockout stage in nine of its twelve previous appearances, Hungary’s entry into the round of 16 of the UEFA EURO 2016 was the country’s most successful performance in 44 years.

Previous encounters

• The last duel took place in June 2016: Ádám Lang with an own goal and Thomas Müller scored in the German 2-0 win in Gelsenkirchen.

• For the DFB-Elf this was the third win in their last four games against Hungary. In June 2004 the DFB-Elf lost 2-0 to Hungary in a friendly in Kaiserslautern.

• Before a 5-2 friendly win in Budapest in August 2001, Germany / Germany had five games without a win against Hungary (4U 1N).

• This will be the two teams’ first competitive match since the 1954 FIFA World Cup final in Bern, when West Germany won 3-2 after falling 2-0 down. Helmut Rahn scored two goals, including the winning goal in the 84th minute.

• In the only other competitive match at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, Hungary beat Germany 8-3 in the preliminary round. Sándor Kocsis was successful four times.

Germany won 13 of the 34 games against Hungary, seven of the ten bankruptcies were conceded in the first 14 duels between the two nations.

• This will only be the second duel between the two nations in Munich; the first, a test match in December 1911, ended in a 4-1 victory for the Hungarians.

EURO facts: Germany

• The DFB team is at a EURO for the 13th time in a row. Only in 1968 did the FRG miss the finals; it was the first attempt.

Germany became European champions in 1972, 1980 and 1996 – and reached the final three more times – and have not missed a semi-final since 2004. At that time you didn’t make it out of the group stage. As a three-time European champion you are a record holder together with Spain.

Great EURO goals from Germany

• The 2-0 defeat against hosts France in 2016 was Germany’s eighth EURO semi-final and the third defeat. The reigning world champion was group winner and had prevailed in the knockout phase against Slovakia (3: 0) and Italy (1: 1, 6: 5 iE).

• Joachim Löw’s team won seven of the eight qualifying matches (1 loss) to qualify for UEFA EURO 2020. The only loss was a 2-4 loss to the Netherlands on 6 September 2019; Germany scored 15 goals in the following four games.

Germany has qualified for the final round of a World or European Championship for the 26th time in a row.

• The first matchday was the first game of the DFB-Elf in Munich since a goalless draw in the friendly against France in September 2018. This means that Munich has 13 wins, 5 draws and 7 defeats. Four of the seven games in the Fußball Arena München were won (1 draw, 2 defeats), but this stadium also suffered the biggest defeat in a European Championship: the 3-0 defeat against the Czech Republic in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008 .

• At the 2006 World Cup, Germany won both games at the Fußball Arena München: In the group stage they beat Costa Rica 4-2 and Sweden 2-0 in the round of 16. 1974 they became world champions in Munich with a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands; it was the only game for the hosts in Munich during this tournament.

EURO facts: Hungary

• Hungarians have qualified for the EURO finals for the second year in a row. Participation in 2016 was the first since 1972 and the first major tournament since the 1986 World Cup. In 1964 and 1972, only four teams were involved in the first two EURO finals in which the Hungarians took part.

• In 2016, the team trained by Bernd Storck secured victory in Group F with five points, tied with Iceland and two points ahead of eventual champion Portugal. The eliminated table bottom Austria came on one counter. Hungary beat Austria 2-0 at the start in Bordeaux, with Ádám Szalai scoring the opening goal, and drew against Iceland (1-1) and Portugal (3-3).

• Marco Rossi’s side qualified for the play-offs after finishing second in their group in the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League. The Hungarians got ten points, two less than Finland, but one more than Greece.

• The Hungarians then won 3-1 in Bulgaria in the play-off semi-finals before trailing behind them in Budapest in the final against Iceland.
