Germany renews 20-year fertility record

Almost 66 thousand children were born in March – a record figure for the last 20 years, the State Statistics Service calculated.

In Germany, in March 2021, the birth rate reached a record high in the last 20 years – almost 66 thousand children were born in a month. This was announced by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, informs DW on Thursday, June 17th.

Previously, the number of newborns exceeded 65 thousand in March 1998.

The department explained the situation by easing restrictions after the first lockdown in Germany in May last year. An increase in the birth rate was outlined as early as February 2021. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, the indicators remained unchanged compared to 2020, which suggests that the lockdown itself did not cause a baby boom.

At the moment, the government department has published only preliminary figures. The updated data will be released in July.

Recall that in 2019, the EU recorded lowest fertility in nearly 60 years… On average, there are 1.53 children per woman in the European Union. This ratio is highest in France, and the lowest in Malta.
