Russia will be left without compensation for Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the event that the German regulator recognizes it as inconsistent with the legal norms of the European Union.

This was stated by the Minister of Economics, Vice-Chancellor of Germany Robert Gabeck in an interview with Der Spiegel, reports DW.

“Now the Federal Grid Agency has suspended the certification procedure. If it is restored, then its purpose will be to decide whether the conditions for certification are met in accordance with German and European rules. And if this is not the case, then compensation is not expected,” he explained.

When asked whether the refusal to use Nord Stream 2 should become part of the sanctions against the Russian Federation in the event of a military invasion of Ukraine, Gabek replied: “There should be no prohibitions on thinking.”

He recalled the relevance of the communiqué agreed in July 2021 by Germany and the United States, which states that if energy is used by Russia as a weapon, then this will have consequences.

Russia knows that crossing the red lines will immediately lead to harsh sanctions that have long been prepared,” the minister added.

The minister noted the geopolitical nature of the gas pipeline.

Nord Stream 2 has always been a geopolitical project in the sense that thanks to the new pipeline, Ukraine becomes “unnecessary” as a transit country. The minister called Germany’s great dependence on Russian gas a fact, and his task is to reduce this dependence, in particular through diversification.

“Now Germany receives 55 percent of the gas it needs from Russia. But the EU has the capacity to receive liquefied gas, for example, in the Netherlands, Poland and Italy. These terminals are only 30 percent loaded. needs for imports,” Gabek said.

At the same time, he acknowledged that liquefied gas is much more expensive, and evaded a direct answer to the question of whether the state is ready to compensate consumers for higher costs.
