Germany arms supplies to Ukraine will put Normandy at risk – Burbock

Giving Germany weapons to Ukraine will endanger Normandy – Burbock

Germany believes that “this is not the time” to change its course 180 degrees, said Annalena Burbock.

The provision of weapons by Germany to Ukraine will jeopardize the negotiations in the Normandy format. This was stated by German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock at the Munich Conference on Friday, February 18.

“For us, this is not an easy decision. But if we jeopardize the Normandy format with this step, that it will no longer work, this, from my point of view, will also be a big security threat for every citizen in Ukraine, due to the situation around the contact lines, in selected areas,” Burbock said.

According to Burbock, it is important for every citizen that the parties return to the negotiating table to discuss the Minsk agreements.

“But we consider every request, because we stand shoulder to shoulder with you and your citizens. Therefore, when you asked for helmets, we looked at how many helmets we can provide, I’m sorry that there were only 5,000 of them. Now we have there’s a new list, we’re looking at it, what we have, what we can do,” Burbock added.

At the same time, Germany does not believe that this is the moment to change its course regarding the supply of weapons by 180 degrees, the minister says.

“We believe this is not the time to change our course 180 degrees. Because we are not exactly the same, despite the fact that we are standing next to each other. We have different paths and different history,” Burbock said.

The head of the German Foreign Ministry noted that Germany has a “historical responsibility” not only to Russia, but also to Ukraine.

“We have a different responsibility for ensuring international order than others. If we look at Poland, France, they were attacked by us, just like the countries of the USSR, and therefore our responsibility after the Second World War was that Germany would never again there will be war and there will never be genocide again,” Burbock summed up.

Recall that earlier The Bundestag refused to increase assistance to Ukraine. The presentation of the CDU/CSU faction on the theme “Opposing the policy of Russia to the unity of the West” was unanimously rejected by all the other factions.

It was also reported that Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for “direct negotiations between Kiev and Moscow”. Ukraine will submit bills on special status and elections in Donbas, Scholz added.
