[ベルリン 5日 ロイター] – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the 5th that the joint declaration with President Xi Jinping against the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine was reason enough for his visit to China the day before.

Along with German business leaders, Scholz was the first G7 leader to visit China following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, but there has been strong criticism in Japan.

Xi agreed that the two leaders “would jointly oppose the use and threat of nuclear weapons” on the situation in Ukraine, but he did not criticize Russia’s aggression or demand its withdrawal from Ukraine.

“This statement alone made my visit to China quite significant,” Scholz said at an event organized by the ruling Social Democratic Party.

Responding to criticism of the continued over-reliance on the Chinese economy, he stressed that he has a clear plan to diversify trading partners, including China, and is pursuing it.

“We will continue to have economic exchanges with China. But I don’t know if in 10 or 30 years from now, but it is certain that we will have a system in place to deal with difficult situations,” he said.
