German Justice orders Tesla to stop cutting down a forest where it plans to build its European Gigafactory

The ruling comes after the complaint of an environmental group that fears that the removal of trees may have a significant impact on drinking water and wildlife in the area.

A German court ordered the US company Tesla to stop woodcutting in the forest near Berlin where it plans to build its first European factory pending the resolution of a complaint filed by the Brandenburg Green League environmental group, reports Reuters.

Last November, Elon Musk, founder and CEO of the company, announced the next opening of its first car and battery factory in Europe around the German capital under the name Gigafactory 4.

The ruling of the Superior Administrative Court of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg comes after the state environmental agency gave the green light to clear 92 hectares of forest for plant construction.

In a statement, the court said it had issued the order to halt woodcutting because Tesla was going to complete the work in just three days, that is, before the judges could make a final decision on the complaint presented by the Green League.

Ecologists expressed concern that the removal of much of the forest could have a significant impact on drinking water and wildlife.

It should not be assumed that the motion for legal protection presented by the Green League has no chance of success, “says the judicial statement.

The decision, which could only be a temporary setback, comes after hundreds of protesters protesting the possible effects of the Tesla Gigafabrica.
