• Jessica Löschke is considered a German cross-country hope.

• The 20-year-old suffered a training accident.

• She rammed a stick into her leg and needed surgery.

It already hurts when reading. The German cross-country skier Jessica Löschke injured herself during a training run by the German ski association DSV in the Ore Mountains during a condition run in the forest. She slipped and rammed a stick through a calf. The sticks are equipped with sharp steel tips for this training.

While Löschke screamed in pain, a trainer reacted immediately. He called the fire department. This cut off the stick on both sides. To pull him out of his calf would have been too dangerous. The 20-year-old then flew a helicopter with the rest of her stick in her calf to the University Hospital in Dresden. Löschke was operated there immediately.

Blessing in disguise

Löschke got off lightly in the painful incident. “Jessica was very lucky in disaster,” the DSV team doctor Tom Kastner is quoted in the German media. “Neither blood vessels nor nerves were hit by the stick.” The 20-year-old said in “Bild” that she was shocked at first, but the initial care and treatment in Dresden were professional. The young cross-country skier should be able to start training again in June.
