There are many indications that FC Barcelona will bring Memphis Depay this winter. The Dutchman is to be the deputy of the injured Ansu Fati, who has been out for about four months. Gerard Houllier, former coach, incl. Liverpool, who are currently advising the president of Olympique Lyonnais, made this clear in an interview with Telefoot.
The media has been speculating that Memphis Depay could move to FC Barcelona since Ronald Koeman took over as coach in the Catalan capital. The Dutch coach knows his compatriot from his time with the staff very well and appreciates his skills.
So far, financial reasons have been an obstacle – although, due to the agreement ending in June, Lyon’s demands were not excessive, after the rule of Josep Maria Bartomeu and the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the Spaniards could not afford to meet them.
The original plan was to sign a contract with Depay in January, which would apply from July next year, and possibly to buy it in the winter if one of the current players could be sold earlier. Ansu Fati’s injury, however, forced the Dutchman to land at Camp Nou sooner.
Gerard Houllier, former coach and currently advisor to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, told Telefoot that this was a very realistic scenario. He gave Eric Abidal as an example.
– It’s soccer, we’ll see. We will do our best to keep it. If he makes as much progress as he did before the injury, it will probably be difficult for us to convince him – He said.
– I think the FC Barcelona coach appreciates it a lot. Depay is happy to be in Lyon, but it was the same with Erik Abidal, and he went to “Barca” – the trainer finished.
