In Georgia, the export and re-export of cars from the European Union (EU) to Russia and Belarus is prohibited. This decision was taken in accordance with the latest EU sanctions package.

“In Georgia, on September 26, a ban on the export and re-export of cars from the European Union to Russia and Belarus came into force,” RBC reports. They added that this ban was adopted based on the latest package of EU sanctions, which prohibits the import into Russia of cars with an engine capacity of more than 1900 cubic centimeters, as well as all electric and hybrid cars.

Georgia, although it does not produce cars, is an active importer of them. In March 2023, the country recorded a sharp increase in the export of passenger cars to Russia, reaching the highest level in the last ten years – 13.5 thousand cars worth $236.8 million, the agency concluded.

Previously, Georgia banned the supply of cars to Russia through its territory ahead of schedule. The restrictions already apply to US cars from August 2023. According to market participants, almost all imports of cars through Georgia to Russia have already ceased.
