A major fire broke out on Tuesday at the construction site for the construction of the new bridge instead of the Morandi Viaduct, which collapsed in August 2018. Sparks are said to have set polystyrene on fire. Delays in completion are now feared.

The causes of the controlled fire are still being determined, Italian media reported.

The new bridge should be passable in mid-May. The Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci, who is also the commissioner for the reconstruction of the bridge, recently emphasized that the infrastructure work should be completed in March.
