In Geneva, spring made its appearance a little early on the calendar. It is the hatching of the first leaf of the chestnut tree of the Treille which announces at the end of the lake the change of season. This event happened on Sunday.
The date remains in the average of observations from recent years when the appearance of the first leaf was noted between March 5 and 24, said the sautier de la République, Laurent Koelliker, in a press release. “Long awaited after this winter which has had mood swings, I am pleased to inform you that today, Sunday March 8, 2020, the official Chestnut tree of the Treille, gallant tree, has bloomed its first leaf symbolically marking the arrival of spring. In the average of observations in recent years, the appearance of the first leaf was observed between 5 and 24 March, “he wrote.
The collection of the first leaf of the chestnut tree in the Treille is an old tradition. It officially started on March 16, 1818. The date of March 8, 2020 will be duly written on the parchment which lists all the dates of hatching of the first leaf.
