The Darmstadt Clinic is training 50 nurses from autumn. The city parliament has declined a performance bonus for city employees to honor special achievements in the Corona crisis.

A few weeks ago there was evening applause from citizens in the vicinity of Darmstadt clinics for medical staff and nursing staff. Sabine Brase, the nursing director of the city clinic, Susanne Karner, the head of nursing training at the Darmstadt clinic, and health and nursing student Timea Hundert also very kindly acknowledged the grateful expressions of solidarity.

On Thursday morning, the nursing staff advertised in the administration building of the Darmstadt Clinic with Verve for their profession, which will continue to change in the next few years. In view of legal changes, nursing training will be more generalist this year. In addition, according to Brase, who has been the nursing director at the Darmstadt Clinic for one and a half years, and Karner, head of training, technological advances in training must always be taken into account.

From October on, health and nursing staff will no longer be trained at the clinic, but nursing staff. This is the result of the new Nursing Professions Act, which has replaced the Elderly Care and Nursing Act that was in effect until the end of 2019. Three nursing professions with different focuses in nursing, childcare and elderly care are now merged into a single nursing profession. The generalist training will last three years and should provide care for people of all ages and prepare for use in all areas of work – i.e. acute care, inpatient long-term care, outpatient care and pediatric nursing.

THE TRAINING PROFESSION

Nursing student Hundert, who is currently in her third year of training, reported that after completing a student internship and finishing school at the Darmstadt Lichtenberg School, she made a conscious decision to take up nursing training in the city clinic. She is “with a lot of passion” and could also further qualify in the next few years.

According to the nursing director at the clinic, nurses are paid according to tariff and receive additional benefits. In the first year after the training, nurses received EUR 2,800 gross.

In the early Thursday evening, the Darmstadt city council also dealt with the work of nurses. An SPD application to set up a “recognition fund” worth two million euros to honor special achievements by city employees and city businesses in the Corona crisis was rejected by a large majority. Only the SPD and the left faction voted for it. The SPD city councilor Tim Huss said that the nurses and medical staff should not only be applauded, but that it was “time for action”.

City treasurer André Schellenberg (CDU) and the CDU parliamentary group leader Roland Desch criticized the application as “populist”. Yücel Akdeniz, leader of the Greens, and Kerstin Lau, chairman of the Uffbasse faction, spoke of a “quick shot” by the SPD and a “one-off effect” that would quickly fizzle out. “Recognition and appreciation don’t look that way,” criticized Akdeniz.
