in a move to bolster national security, the Senegalese National Gendarmerie initiated a large-scale operation, Fanganta 3,
on April 18, 2025, targeting the Kédougou region in southeastern senegal. The operation aims to combat insecurity and criminal activities prevalent in this border area, particularly around clandestine gold panning sites.
Targeting Criminogenic Zones
The gendarmerie’s primary objective is to clean up areas with high criminogenic potential,
focusing on the illegal gold panning sites that have proliferated in the localities of Bougouda and Bantaco. These sites are frequently associated with various illicit activities.

Initial Results: Seizures and Dismantled Camps
As of April 20, the operation had yielded notable results.authorities dismantled several Diouras
(goldsmith camps) and illegal bars. A substantial amount of equipment and contraband was seized.

- 55 biting hammers
- 5 solar panels
- 10 20-liter cans of diesel
- 1 motorcycle
- 4.5 kilograms of Indian hemp
- Numerous boxes of alcoholic drinks and cigarettes
