Gemini App Redesigns Prompt bar, Integrates Model Picker for Streamlined Access
Google is updating the Gemini app with a redesigned prompt bar that moves the model picker-allowing users to select between gemini 1.0 Pro, 1.5 Pro, and other models-to the bottom-right corner. The change also repositions the microphone icon within a circular housing. This update aims to provide more intuitive access to model selection directly within conversations, enhancing the user experience for both Android and iOS platforms.
The shift represents a move toward greater user control and adaptability within the Gemini ecosystem. Previously located below the ”Gemini” branding on the homepage, the model picker’s new location allows users to quickly adjust the AI model powering their next prompt mid-conversation. Selecting options like “Gemini 1.5 Flash” or “Gemini 1.5 Pro” will continue to trigger the familiar bottom sheet interface for model selection.
The box-less prompt bar redesign itself has already been widely deployed to Gemini app users on both Android and iOS, with some reporting the change as early as last month. While the prompt bar update is broadly available, the new model picker location is currently rolling out to a limited number of devices. Users who haven’t yet received the update might potentially be able to trigger it by force-stopping the Gemini app.
