Gbagbo designs his future party, imbroglio with the former First Lady

Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo on Tuesday unveiled the members of a committee tasked with reflecting on the contours of his future party, a list in which appears Simone Gbagbo, the former First Lady who says she is “not very inclined” to join this new training.

In the list published Tuesday, Ms. Gbagbo was confined to a secondary role, member of an “enlarged think tank” of around 100 names. But in the evening, the latter said she was “surprised” that her name was circulating without having been “previously consulted”.

“I remain skeptical about these practices and failures and I am reluctant to join this type of initiative because I deserve a minimum of respect and consideration,” she added in a statement.

Relations between Simone and Laurent Gbagbo have been strained since the latter’s return to Abidjan in mid-June.

Acquitted by international justice who tried him for crimes against humanity, he returned to the Ivorian capital, after ten years of absence, on the arm of another woman, Nady Bamba, his companion since the early 2000s. He also filed for divorce from Simone just days after his return.

The political paths of the former strong couple from Côte d’Ivoire – Laurent Gbagbo was president from 2000 to 2011 – therefore seem to be separating. On August 9, Mr. Gbagbo announced his desire to create a new party, thus breaking with the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) he had created in 1982.

However, he should be followed by many historical FPI executives: Tuesday’s list notably highlights his old fellow traveler Assoa Adou, his former Minister of Employment Hubert Oulaye or even Sébastien Dano Djedje who has been in government several times. under his presidency.
