Gay Group Experiences Monkey Smallpox, IDI Straightens the Situation

Jakarta

Monkeypox has recently become a public spotlight after its cases continued to grow so rapidly that it was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reports that there have been more than 28,000 cases of monkeypox worldwide.

The gay group or MSM (men who have sex with men) is said to be at the highest risk of being exposed to monkeypox in this outbreak. Why is that?

The head of the PB IDI Monkeypox (monkeypox) Task Force as well as a representative of the Indonesian Dermatology and Venereology (Perdoski) Specialist Doctors Association, Dr. Hanny Nilasari, SpKK, explained that there was indeed a study that found that gay groups had the most monkeypox infections.

But theoretically, the monkeypox virus is not transmitted through sexual contact, but because of intense skin-to-skin contact or mucosa-to-mucosa. This is why the group is more at risk of being infected with monkeypox.

“So it was found in one study that many of these gay MSM groups had monkeypox infections. In theory this is not an infection that is transmitted through sexual intercourse or not classified as STI (sexually transmitted infection). But because of intense skin-to-skin contact or between mucosa with the mucosa, so this community or this group experiences a lot of monkeypox infection conditions,” he said in a virtual press conference, Friday (5/8/2022).

“If it is associated with a higher risk of course, yes. Because the intense contact between the mucosa and the mucosa in this group is higher,” he continued.
