Gates have disappeared from state highways. MF and KAS introduce a new system. Known dates and other details

From the beginning of July this year, the government took over the toll collection on the Konin – Stryków (A2) and Wrocław – Sośnica (A4) routes. There is a toll on these sections highway it is collected electronically or classically, at the gates. The system is to be unified by the end of next year.

No gates on state highways

The management of toll collection on the mentioned sections is the responsibility of the National Tax Administration. Institution together with Ministry of Finance has just announced that it is working on a new system that will allow for a departure from manual toll collection for tolls on the motorway and, consequently, the elimination of gates.

– Our goal is to collect all tolls in one gateway system. We want to fully use the potential of new technologies and create a system that will be safe and convenient for road users – says Minister of Finance Tadeusz Kościński. However, it will be possible to resign from gates only in the fourth quarter of 2021 due to binding contracts with subcontractors for their service. The KAS Electronic Toll Collection System itself may be launched earlier – with the launch of the e-Toll system.

We will introduce toll collection in the ‘free flow’ mode, i.e. without stopping vehicles at toll collection points. This will not mean that passenger cars must be equipped with GPS transmitters. We want the e-Toll system to be used by the National Revenue Administration to collect all road tolls. Reporting geolocation data for light vehicles is optional

– explains the head of KAS Magdalena Rzeczkowska.

How will we pay for the toll on the motorway?

Cars passenger cars and other vehicles up to 3.5 tons will be able to pay for the motorway ride in one of two ways:

  • by purchasing a motorway ticket (e-Ticket),
  • on the basis of geolocation data provided to the KAS Electronic Toll Collection System (e-Toll), in the same way as for heavy vehicles, e.g. using the free application for mobile devices provided by KAS.

According to the government, the advantage of the highway ticket is that there is no need to transfer geolocation data and use GPS devices. Such a ticket can be purchased via the website, a self-service terminal, a mobile or banking application, as well as at a petrol station or at a kiosk
