Your son, your sister, your cousin or you may have been victims during the holidays, it spoiled you Christmas or the following days, it contaminated your loved ones. Gastroenteritis has attacked hard this year. The Sentinelles network speaks of “strong activity” for the last period analyzed, that of December 23 to 29.
The strongest epidemic in 10 years
The map of France, and in particular the Center-Val de Loire region, is almost all red. A phenomenon not exceptional in this season, certainly, but “its incidence, if it remains in the bracket, was higher than that of the last ten years”, specifies Charly Kengne-Kuetche, epidemiologist at the antenna Center of the network.

Understand that there are more patients than in previous years: 6,823 cases have been reported by the territory’s volunteer doctors. 258 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The panel is considered sufficient to assess the situation. Even if not all patients are counted – since only 1,300 doctors across France report this data -, nor anyone who has not consulted.
Beware of dehydration
The network focuses on specific data: diarrhea. The reason for the consultation must correspond to “at least three liquid or soft stools per day for less than 14 days”. It therefore does not identify the vomiting and fever that may be associated with it.
It is recommended for fragile people (children, the elderly, chronic diseases) with such diarrhea to consult a doctor. Because the risk is to find yourself dehydrated. Hence the need to to drink a lot of water to compensate for that evacuated in the stool.
Prevention is better than cure…
To avoid sharing your miasma with your colleagues or your family, prevention consists of:
- wash your hands often with soap and water,
- clean detergent contaminated surfaces (including door handles, tables, flushes, etc.)
- aerate and ventilate the rooms in your home.
