Golden Knights Reign Supreme in PSAC athletics
Lock Haven, Pa. – Gannon University has been awarded the Dixon Trophy, recognizing them as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) most successful institution for the 2024-25 academic year. The proclamation was made Thursday afternoon,marking Gannon’s third triumph in the last four seasons.
This achievement places Gannon alongside bloomsburg and Lock Haven as the onyl three-time winners of the prestigious trophy. Moreover,Gannon now holds the distinction of being the all-time leader for dixon Trophies awarded to PSAC Western Division campuses.
A Legacy of Excellence
The Dixon trophy, now in its 28th year, is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest score based on performance in conference playoffs and regular-season records. The scoring system rewards consistent excellence across all sports.
The award is given to the program which generates the top average point value among each PSAC Championship sport it sponsors. Each sport champion earns 18 points – based on the league’s membership total – and descending point values are awarded for respective placement.
Gannon University excelled, topping the PSAC competition with an average point total of 12.34.
Slippery Rock University was a close runner-up, averaging 12.24, narrowly missing a second consecutive Dixon Trophy. East Stroudsburg University secured third place with an average of 12.07.
IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) and West Chester University rounded out the top five, placing fourth and fifth with averages of 10.53 and 10.48, respectively.
Key Victories and Strong Performances
Gannon’s success in 2024-25 was fueled by meaningful point accumulations across multiple sports. The university secured PSAC Championships in men’s and women’s golf and men’s basketball. Additionally,runner-up finishes in men’s soccer,men’s swimming,and women’s volleyball contributed considerably to their overall score.
Gannon’s average of men’s sports programs was a PSAC-leading 13.13.
Historical Perspective
While Gannon is celebrating its third Dixon Trophy, other institutions have a longer history of success. Shippensburg University leads all PSAC institutions with eight Dixon Trophies, followed by West Chester University with five. Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Gannon each have three, while California University of pennsylvania and Slippery Rock University are two-time winners. Kutztown University and Millersville University have each won a single Dixon Trophy.
