Ganglioneuritis is an inflammation of the ganglia and the nerves exiting there. People have difficulty walking and difficulty putting one leg in front of the other.

As the control centers on the spinal cord, the ganglia are responsible for evaluating the information provided by nerve cells about where which part of the body is and which state which joint is currently in. A ganglion is a collection of nerve cell bodies from which a thickening of the nerve cord results.

Cause: inflammation, which restricts the conductivity of the nerves

If these ganglia do not work correctly, those affected suffer from typical gait problems. You have difficulty coordinating one leg in front of the other. The cause can be severe inflammation, which restricts the conductivity of the nerves. In such a case, signs of inflammation can be detected in the blood, in the nerve fluid and in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is smoldering in the ganglia and the nerve fibers originating there.

The immune system attacks the ganglia and nerve fibers

If an attack by the immune system on the ganglia and nerve fibers is responsible for the inflammation, it is called autoimmune ganglioneuritis. If an attempt at therapy with high-dose cortisone administered via the vein does not lead to sufficient relief, blood washing can be helpful in the acute phase of the disease, which repeatedly filters the aggressive defense cells directed against the nerves and ganglia from the blood. In the long run, however, such therapy would be too costly and stressful for those affected. In such cases, the solution can be modern drugs such as rituximab. It consists of so-called monoclonal antibodies that intercept the inflammatory cells and protect the ganglia and nerves.
