G7: The world looks at Bavaria – and jokes

“Statesman meets country bumpkin!”

The very Bavarian reception at the federal government’s summit caused a lot of ridicule on Twitter. “Statesman meets country bumpkin,” judges one user. And the board of directors of the Heinrich Boell Foundation, which is close to the Greens, Jan Philipp Albrecht, irritated the question: “Which society should this represent?”

Foreign journalists also make the costume parade a topic. “For me, Germans never dress like this when I come to visit,” wrote British columnist Ian Bremmer, who has almost 700,000 followers on Twitter. In the comments below, a number of Germans, obviously embarrassed, quickly sought clarification. “These people are Bavarians. Germans don’t dress like that,” wrote one user.

Mockery of Söder in the BR24 comments

A BR24 user also criticizes Söder’s style of clothing in the comments, specifically his open jacket: “And one more thing about Söder and his sloppy outfit: today he can see how people dress on the international stage. He clearly doesn’t belong there.”

Another BR24 user states: “Clothes make the man. It also has something to do with respect for the guest. Either you have it or you don’t have it: the sense of style.”
