G4 virus is said to be able to trigger a new pandemic, there is already an exposed population

Researchers in China discovered a new type of swine flu called the could trigger a new pandemic. In a study published in the PNAS science journal, the virus was named the same G4 virus as the H1N1 strain that had caused the swine flu pandemic in 2009.

The G4 virus is observed to be highly contagious, replicates in humans and causes very serious symptoms in experimental animals, compared to other viruses.

It says 1 out of 10 or about 10 percent of workers in a pig slaughterhouse have been infected with G4, according to antibody tests that show exposure to the virus. Test results also showed that around 4.4 percent of the population in China appeared to have been exposed.

Although there is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted between humans, researchers say if G4 continues to mutate and replicate it will risk causing a pandemic in the future.

Between 2011 and 2018, researchers took 30,000 nasal swabs from pigs at slaughterhouses in 10 Chinese provinces and at animal hospitals, which led researchers to find about 179 swine flu viruses. Researchers then conducted experiments, including ferrets, or ferrets, which are widely used in flu studies because they show human-like symptoms.

“All the characteristics appear to be very adaptable to infecting humans,” the authors, scientists at China University and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of China, were quoted by The Guardian.
