When the SAS strike got in the way of the boys’ trip to Split, the gang bought a car and got behind the wheel of a used Opel Astra.

On Monday morning, Leon Kolstad (19), Tobias Hoem (20), Ole Eide (19) and Andre Halås (20) were to fly with SAS from Gardermoen to Split. That plan quickly fell apart when the SAS strike the same day became a fact.

When alternative flights were either too expensive or fully booked, the gang from Molde took matters into their own hands to get on a boys’ trip to Croatia.

They found the solution on Finn.no: A used Opel Astra for 11,000 kroner.

– We looked at a number of planes as soon as the planes were canceled, but there were stiff prices and a lot was sold out, so it did not pay off. Then one of us realized that it could be cheaper to drive down by car, says Leon Kolstad.

USED CAR: The gang just after they picked up the car at Storo in Oslo.

The car was picked up at Storo in Oslo on Monday night. Then a 25-hour drive through Denmark, Germany, Austria and Slovenia, among others.

– We think it was a bit fun that it was a bit spontaneous. It is without a doubt an experience, we get to see a lot of land, says Hoem and adds,

– In addition, air conditioning in the car does not work, so it is an experience as well.

Being contacted by Norwegians

VG interviewed the gang at Gardermoen on Monday afternoon. Then they had been at the airport for several hours after the departure to Croatia was canceled. The plan further had not yet been laid.

– We may consider just buying a cheap car and driving downhill, said Andre Halås.

The boys think new plane tickets would cost up to twice as much as what they paid for the car.

– If we had something else, it could quickly be up to 20 to 22,000 kroner, plus accommodation, says Hoem.

When VG met the gang at Gardermoen on Monday afternoon, the plan was not made:

The gang will fly Norwegian home again. The plan is therefore to either scrap or sell the car in Croatia.

– We have received messages from Norwegians who have asked to drive the car home again because their plane has been hit by a strike.

In good spirits

When VG talks to them on Tuesday night, the four boys are at a picnic site somewhere in Germany.

– So far it has gone well, we are positive now. But it’s a car for 11,000, so it’s not the nicest car in the world. But it was EU-approved and had an engine that probably would not go on strike, says Hoem.

The boys say that so far they have not made a mistake. Since everyone has the note, they take turns driving, sleeping and reading maps. Now they hope to be in place in Split during the night. Then a short week awaits in Croatia.

– Actually, we hope to be there at one or two o’clock, but it quickly looks like we are there at four or five o’clock, maybe six. So it will be a bit of driving, but we will change.

– We are not there yet, but have good faith that it will go well.

STUFFED LUGGAGE ROOM: The photo was taken from the travel party’s stop in Germany, not far from the border with Austria.
