The balance of levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone in the body is very important for humans. If the amount of these two hormones is too low or too high, in both women and men, it can increase the risk of health problems. However, in men, the levels of the hormone progesterone in their bodies tend to be lower than women.

In women, the hormone progesterone also has a very important function. One of them regulates the menstrual cycle. Then, what are the actual benefits of the hormone progesterone? Check out the full review quoted from Hellosehat and various sources, Wednesday (12/22/2021):

What is Progesterone Hormone?

Before discussing about the hormone progesterone, it helps us know in advance the notion of the hormone. Hormones are chemicals in the body that help coordinate various body functions.

What is meant by body functions include metabolism, growth, development, emotions, mood, sleep, blood pressure, to the reproductive system.

In the human body, there are various kinds of hormones that have their respective functions. One of them is progesterone. In women, this hormone is produced by the adrenal glands and the corpus luteum, which are temporary endocrine glands in the ovaries that the body produces after ovulation.

Functions of the Hormone Progesterone in Women

The following are the functions of the female hormone progesterone:

1. Regulate Menstrual Cycle and Fertilization

The first function of the hormone progesterone is to regulate the menstrual cycle. In the middle of the menstrual cycle, the body produces luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to support the process of releasing eggs (ovulation) from the ovarian follicle.

After the egg is released, the corpus luteum is formed and begins to produce progesterone. In this phase, the function of the hormone progesterone is to help prepare the woman’s body for a potential pregnancy.

Progesterone works by thickening the wall of the uterus (endometrium) to receive an egg that has been fertilized by a sperm. At the same time, progesterone also gives a message to the body not to ovulate.

If no fertilization occurs (not pregnant), the corpus luteum will be damaged and progesterone levels will decrease. These changes then trigger the occurrence of menstruation again.

However, when pregnancy occurs, the body will produce high levels of progesterone which causes the body not to ovulate. This is what makes women stop menstruating during pregnancy.

2. Launch Menstruation

Women who have low progesterone levels will experience an abnormal menstrual cycle. Low progesterone has also been linked to infertility. This is because the absence of progesterone would not be an inappropriate environment for the conceived egg to grow. Women who have low progesterone levels and manage to conceive are at higher risk of miscarriage or premature labour.

3. Breastfeeding

Progesterone is a hormone that can launch breast milk production. Progesterone helps stimulate the mammary glands to produce milk that will be used for breastfeeding the baby.

By the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy, the breasts are fully capable of producing milk. As in puberty, estrogen controls the growth of the ducts, and progesterone controls the growth of the glandular buds.

4. Sexuality

The hormone progesterone can also affect sexual desire in women. Usually, it occurs before and around ovulation. At that time, the levels of the female hormones progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone are also on the rise.

5. Puberty

Together with the hormone estrogen, progesterone also plays a role in sexual development during puberty (adolescence). These include breast development, widening of the pelvis, increased activity of sweat glands and oil glands in the skin, and growth of pubic and underarm hair.

Functions of the Hormone Progesterone in Men

As already mentioned above, that the hormone progesterone is also present in the male body. However, the levels are not as high as that of women. Progesterone levels in the male body are relatively low. However, this hormone still has a very important function, namely helping the process of spermiogenesis in order to mature sperm.

Progesterone also plays a role in the process of testosterone formation. Another function of this hormone in men is to affect the central nervous system and the immune system, as well as stimulate weight gain and appetite.

How to Increase Progesterone Hormone

In women, the hormone progesterone is very important to support the development of the reproductive system. There are several ways that can be done to stimulate the growth of these hormones, including:

1. Managing Weight

Excess weight is said to trigger the body to produce other hormones, such as estrogen, to be higher. This of course can trigger an imbalance in the ratio with progesterone.

2. Manage Stress

Stress can stimulate the body to produce the hormone cortisol or stress hormone. It also triggers the kidneys to convert hormones such as progesterone into cortisol. Therefore, you must be able to know how to control stress.

3. Exercise in moderation

Exercise is an activity that is actually very good for the body. It’s just that, if excessive, exercise can have a boomerang effect on health. Excessive exercise can actually trigger stress in the body which will produce stress hormones.

4. Use a suppository

Another way to increase the hormone progesterone is to receive progesterone suppositories. Suppositories will be inserted into the woman’s body through the vagina. Progesterone suppositories are also said to have another effect, namely improving the health of the tissues in the uterus and playing a role in pregnancy.

In addition to trying several ways to increase the hormone progesterone, there are some foods that are said to be able to increase the production of this hormone, such as:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
