On July 31, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology announced the results of the 2023 National Academic Ability and Learning Situation Survey (National Academic Ability Test) conducted in April targeting all 6th grade elementary school students and 3rd grade junior high school students. Looking at the average percentage of correct answers at public schools by prefecture, Fukui ranked 3rd in both Japanese language and mathematics for 6th grade elementary school students, 2nd in both Japanese language and mathematics for 3rd grade junior high school students, and 5th in English for the first time in four years. 12,551 students from 258 public elementary and junior high schools in Fukui Prefecture participated. The average correct answer rate was 71% for Japanese in the 6th grade (national average of 67.2%) and 66% for arithmetic (62.5%). 73% (69.8%) of junior high school students learned Japanese, 55% (51.0%) of mathematics, and 48% (45.6%) of English. It’s been three years in a row that no subject won first place. English dropped from the first place in the previous survey (2019), when it was implemented for the first time.
