Tourist Injured by Volcanic Eruption on Fuego Volcano
A tourist sustained serious burns and injuries after being struck by rocks and hot material during an eruption of the Fuego volcano in Guatemala on November 30, 2025.The incident occurred near the volcano’s crater, according to a report from the National Association of Departmental Municipal Firefighters (ASONBOMD).
Firefighters from San Miguel Dueñas and the El Rosario village substation responded to the emergency, locating the injured man with a descending group of tourists after a challenging search in arduous terrain. Rescuers provided pre-hospital care during the multi-hour descent and later transferred the victim to a healthcare center for specialized medical attention.
Authorities have stated that the tourists were operating outside of designated restriction areas established for observing volcanic activity. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) noted that cloud cover likely obscured the falling of hot blocks, contributing to the incident.
Both Conred and the Secretariat of Social Dialogue have recently issued reminders regarding safety precautions and climbing restrictions for active volcanoes like Fuego, emphasizing the potential for sudden changes in eruptive activity and associated risks.
