From North Rhine-Westphalia to Brandenburg: Trains and S-Bahn trains are at a standstill in many places

From NRW to Brandenburg
Trains and S-Bahn trains stand still in many places

Heavy snowfall and freezing cold have parts of Germany firmly under control. Especially in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, this causes problems in rail traffic. Regional trains have to be diverted or fail completely. Long-distance traffic is also severely restricted.

The onset of winter in parts of Germany has led to problems in regional transport for the railways in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. In NRW, the Ruhr area is particularly affected. Overhead lines were damaged in several places, said a railway spokeswoman. That concerns about the important route between Duisburg and Essen.

There are also major restrictions in long-distance transport. Trains do not currently run between Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia or between Hamburg and Hanover – there are restrictions between Hamburg and Berlin. Long-distance traffic between Berlin and Frankfurt am Main via Braunschweig / Kassel is suspended until further notice, the same applies according to the railway between Berlin, Hanover and Dortmund / Cologne. According to the information provided by the railway, there are no long-distance trains between Berlin, Leipzig / Halle and Erfurt at least until midday.

“Particularly strong wind and snow drifts make the emergency services to create,” said a railway spokeswoman. In Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony, train traffic is also impaired by heavy snowfall. The situation at the train stations is calm. Most people followed the recommendation of the German Weather Service and stayed at home.

Restrictions from Braunschweig to Berlin

The regional trains between Münster and Recklinghausen and the S-Bahn between Dortmund and Hagen could no longer run due to an overhead line fault or had to be diverted. The private Eurobahn also reported several train cancellations due to the onset of winter, especially around Münster, Bielefeld and Paderborn.

In Lower Saxony’s regional traffic, too, many trains are canceled due to snow and cold in the morning. Among other things, the entire S-Bahn traffic in Hanover should stand still until around 10 a.m., announced the Deutsche Bahn. Traffic in the Harz-Weser network is also expected to be out in the morning. Trains with stops in Braunschweig, Göttingen, Nordhausen, Bad Harzburg or Salzgitter-Lebenstedt are affected.

There are restrictions in rail traffic between Berlin, Brandenburg and other federal states due to heavy snowfall. So far, long-distance traffic has mainly been affected, but there are also failures in regional traffic between Brandenburg and Magdeburg, as the railway announced in the morning.

During the night there had already been several train cancellations at Deutsche Bahn. Connections to and from Hameln, Hildesheim, Nienburg and Celle were affected. In advance, the Deutsche Bahn had canceled several long-distance connections in northern Germany due to the weather, including the intercity from Bremen to Norddeich Mole.

Also on the NordWestBahn, the connections between Osnabrück and Wilhelmshaven will be canceled on Sunday morning due to weather conditions. The metronome route between Hanover and Göttingen cannot be used due to frozen points. At the Erixx railway company, the connection between Bad Harzburg and Hanover via Goslar is initially canceled.
