From bankruptcy to winning their 55 championship, Rangers’ road back

After a decade of waiting, the Rangers de Glasgow again raised a title of the Scottish League Y broke the dominance of Celtic of nine championships in a row.

The fall

Rangers won their 52, 53 and 54 titles in the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons where it looked like they were going to start an unprecedented dominance in Scottish football, but it was the beginning of the crisis.

During the 2011-12 season, Craig Whyte, owner of Rangers at the time, was in a fight with the Scottish Government for tax evasion and caused the team to have to change management as the dispute was resolved.

Due to this, the Scottish Premier punished the team with a deduction of 10 points and that was the difference for Celtic to be crowned champion of the 2011-12 season.

Whyte was unable to win his dispute with the government and as a result the team declared bankruptcy and was liquidated in June 2012, causing Rangers to be on the brink of disappearing.

A new group of investors bought Rangers, but had to start from scratch because of the tax evasion scandal; the team had to start in the Fourth Division of Scotland because they did not meet all the requirements to maintain their place in the Premier.

The way back

With a new group of players and a punishment of a year without being able to make signings, Rangers returned to the Premier in four years by being champions of the Fourth Division in 2012-13, the Third Division in 2013-14 and the Second Division in 2015-16.

His first years in the Scottish Premier after relegation weren’t the best as Celtic took advantage of his absence to become the dominant team in the league.

Rangers was third place in the 2016-17 Premier season with 67 points, but 39 points behind Celtic; they got 70 in 2017-18, but stayed in position three.

Gerrard’s arrival

Steven Gerrard was hired in May 2018 and in his first two seasons he stayed in second place in the Scottish Premier and Rangers lost the League Cup final against Celtic in the 2019-20 season.

But in 2020-21 it was another story because Gerrard’s Rangers were a game-winning machine because they have 28 wins and four draws in 32 games with 77 goals in favor and only nine against.

They were crowned champions with a 3-0 win over St. Mirren, while Celtic drew 0-0 with Dundee United on matchday 32 of the Scottish Premier; there are still six dates to play.

Rangers are in the round of 16 of the Europa League, where they are seeking their second crown in the competition (they won the UEFA Cup in 2008), and they have not yet started their participation in the Scottish Cup, they have not won it since 2009.
