Slovak Press Photo Awards Showcase Nation’s Defining Moments
Bratislava, Slovakia – Images capturing both civic unrest and natural disaster dominated the 2025 Slovak Press Photo awards, announced today, September 19, 2025. The winning photographs offer a stark visual record of a year marked by widespread anti-government demonstrations and devastating floods along the Danube River.
The annual competition, a key event in Slovak journalism, highlights the power of photojournalism to document critical events and shape public understanding. This year’s selections reflect a nation grappling with political tensions and the increasing impacts of climate change. The winning entries, chosen from a field of submissions, provide a compelling diary of the country’s recent experiences, impacting citizens across Slovakia and prompting national conversations.
Photographer Milan Kucera received recognition for his coverage of anti-government protests, while Dorota Holubová’s poignant depiction of the flooded Danube earned her an award. Holubová’s image captures the extent of the flooding, which impacted communities along the river in June 2025,forcing evacuations and causing notable damage. The awards underscore the vital role of visual storytelling in bearing witness to both social and environmental challenges.
