14:51 – Robin Frijns has achieved his third victory in the DTM. The Dutchman was the fastest during the first race this weekend at the Nürburgring, ahead of René Rast and Marco Wittmann.
Audi Abt driver Frijns had started the race from second place, but had already outsmarted pole sitter Rast before the first corner, while Frijns’ teammate and classification leader Nico Müller had dropped back to fourth from third place on the grid.
Frijns immediately drove away and had already built up a lead of almost two seconds on the rest of the field in the second lap. Unfortunately, that lead was canceled out by the safety car that came onto the track to clear up some debris from a collision at the start.
At the restart, Frijns was able to keep his car expertly for that of Rast and Müller. The latter saw his chances of a podium finish disappear in smoke when he got a tap at the entrance of the second corner and had to join the back of the field.
Not much later, Müller was lucky. The German had just been in for new tires when Loic Duval raised a yellow flag. The Frenchman’s car was in such a dangerous place that a new safety car seemed inevitable. Even before he was sent on the track, however, the entire field had already entered and so the also pitted Frijns managed to keep his lead. Müller, however, managed to take advantage of the situation and move up to P6.
Derde safety car
In the 21st round it was again hit and Duval was the instigator again. The French driver hit Fabio Scherer and the damage was such that a safety car was needed again. Once again Frijns managed to keep a cool head and in the rest of the race, the Dutchman was able to drive to the finish and the podium without being threatened. In the championship Frijns is doing good business, the number two in the rankings is the number one Müller to thirteen points (216 to 203 points).
