French ‘priority for vaccinated’ is divisive

French President Emmanuel Macron calls people who deliberately not vaccinate “irresponsible and selfish”. He said that during his working visit to Polynesia. “If you infect your father or mother tomorrow, they will be a victim of the freedom you demand. While there is something to protect yourself and others,” said the French president, referring to the vaccines against covid-19. “Freedom without obligations to others does not exist. Freedom comes with mutual duties.”

Macron’s comments come at a sensitive time for three reasons. On Saturday, for the third time in two weeks, demonstrations were held across the country against the government’s vaccination policies. There were more than 160,000 demonstrators on the leg.

Parliament has also been debating a new vaccination law since last week. And the number of corona infections is increasing throughout France up again soon, especially with the delta variant. The R-value is nationally at 1.87 and the average number of daily infections increased by more than 200 percent in a week.

Benefits for vaccinated persons

President Macron’s government sent a new law to parliament last week, hoping to boost vaccinations in France. At present, some 32 million French people are fully vaccinated, which is almost half of the population. But that is still far from what is needed for herd immunity.

The government is therefore going to give more benefits to people who have had both shots. The new law states that they will soon be allowed to enter cafes and restaurants, for example, and they are also welcome in other places where many people are gathered. People without a vaccine must always show a recent test proof.
