French police arrest 193 people in new demonstration ‘Yellow Vests’ | NOW

The French police already has 193 people on Saturday arrested at new demonstrations by hundreds of ‘Yellow Vests’ in Paris. Two protest marches were held. One of these went in an orderly manner, but at the other, protesters went off the agreed route to start fires. The police intervenes with tear gas.

The ‘Gilets Jaunes’ (‘Yellow Vests’) started in 2018 with weekly protests against Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies. The actions were proclaimed by French social movements. Campaigners put on the bright yellow vests to show that they are united. The demonstrations often resulted in riots.

This year, the demonstrations took place less because of the corona outbreak. Hundreds of ‘Yellow Vests’ did take to the streets in March despite the corona measures. On Saturday, large numbers of demonstrators can again be seen on the street.

Organized protest marches were allowed to take place at two locations in the city. Protesters of one march deviated from the designated route at the Avenue de Wagram, after which police officers with heavy packs intervened.

Objects such as hammers and a metal rod have been confiscated from several people. Demonstrators set a car and several rubbish bins on fire.

Protesters are not allowed to go to the largest shopping street Paris

New demonstrations were allowed to continue on Saturday in certain parts of the French capital. The shopping street Champs-Élysées, among others, is currently off-limits to demonstrators, because riots often broke out there in 2018.

The police also called on protesters to respect the corona measures. France has designated Paris as a red zone, making it mandatory to wear a mouth mask outside of the city
