France’s main official body, which represents followers of the Muslim religion, on Thursday urged believers to cancel the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, expressing grief over the murder in the church in Nice.
The last prayers before the mosques are closed under the quarantine regime must be “a tribute to the victims and a reflection in memory of the victims,” the French Muslim Religious Council (CFCM) said.
The organization acknowledged that it was moved by the “message of peace and brotherhood” received from the Conference of French Catholic Bishops.

Police have shot the killer, but he is alive and taken to hospital, the mayor of Nice said.
French Prime Minister Jean-Claude Coxes said the attack was as cowardly as barbaric and said he had decided to raise the threat in the so-called “Vigipirate” terrorist alert system to the highest level.
