French government majority rewrites controversial article ve …

The three majority parties in the French parliament will ‘completely rewrite’ a controversial article of the security law and then submit it to parliament. This is what party leader Christophe Castaner of LREM said in the National Assembly on Monday.

It concerns Article 24, which states that the dissemination of images on which members of the security forces can be seen during interventions is punishable if those images affect their ‘physical or psychological integrity’. That law has been fiercely under fire from media and human rights organizations in recent days.

“We know there are still doubts,” said the former Home Secretary. He said that he wanted to ‘extinguish’ those ‘doubts’ and to prevent the ‘incomprehension’ from growing.

Opponents of article 24 of the ‘general security’ law are not satisfied with an obstacle to the right to information and want nothing more than the withdrawal of the article.

For weeks there has been fierce protest against the article that according to the government should better protect the police.

Distributing images with identifiable police officers would become a criminal offense in the bill if the distributor has the malicious intent to harm a cop. A violation carries a maximum of one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

The Assembly had actually approved the text last week.
