Freiburg: Mobility change in the region – Greens call for stabilization and expansion of the Breisgau S-Bahn and a cross-border direct connection Colmar-Freiburg

A well-functioning and reliable Breisgau S-Bahn is a prerequisite and backbone for the shift from car traffic to local public transport and thus also for the achievement of municipal and national climate goals. For the Greens in the region, an increased expansion of local public transport is one of the environmental and transport policy priorities.
The district executives of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Emmendingen and Freiburg are in favor of rapid progress in the stabilization and expansion of the Breisgau S-Bahn (BSB). “We support the state government’s goal of doubling the number of passengers in public transport by 2030 and welcome the recently adopted public transport strategy for Baden-Württemberg. This must also include the upcoming stabilization and expansion of the Breisgau S-Bahn,” said Freiburg district chairman Gregor Kroschel.
“The Breisgau S-Bahn must become more reliable and efficient for commuters. It is therefore good that Transport Minister Winfried Hermann has set up a future commission for the Breisgau S-Bahn together with the region. The first important steps towards a solution were taken with a priority connection security in Gottenheim station, the more reliable approach to the stop at the university hospital and the procurement of more powerful trains. However, it is also clear that the rail infrastructure must be further expanded and modernized at the same time. These include the Rhine Valley Railway and the reactivation of the Freiburg-Colmar railway line,” says Nadyne Saint-Cast, Member of the Freiburg Parliament.
The three district associations also expressly support the efforts of the state government and the region to build the direct rail connection between Freiburg and Colmar. The goal is a 30-minute cycle between Colmar and Himmelreich near Freiburg.
Well-developed local public transport makes it easier to shift traffic flows away from the roads. Planning capacities and funds for the direct rail connection are to be gained, for example, by not implementing a new B31 West.

Chantal Kopf MdB, member of the constituency and European policy spokeswoman for the Green parliamentary group in the Bundestag, explains: “The Freiburg-Breisach-Colmar rail connection is far more than a regional local transport project – it is anchored in the Aachen Treaty, which was passed at the highest government level, an important signal of Franco-German friendship and makes Europe grow even closer together here with us. Germany and France must find common ways of financing, and I am also in favor of registering the project for EU funding.”
The cooperation of the political actors on the German and French side is of fundamental importance for the success of the direct connection. “Our state government, the regional council and our elected representatives are active in various binational discussion forums,” says Freiburg district chairwoman Jasmin Ateia.
