At the end of July, officials from the main customs office in Lörrach checked two vehicles at the Breisgau service area that had loaded a total of almost 2,300 kilograms of smoking tobacco.
The two drivers, two brothers from Belgium, did not have any of the papers required to transport the excise goods with them.
The tobacco was seized, and criminal proceedings were initiated against the two suspects on suspicion of evading about 60,000 euros tobacco tax.
Investigators at the Stuttgart Customs Investigation Office, Freiburg headquarters, are now clarifying whether the smoking tobacco was smuggled into Germany or whether it is tobacco from local cultivation.
