For the fifth time, the BioMed Technology Foundation is awarding the Freiburg Innovation Prize, which is jointly donated with the Freiburg innovation leader in the field of medical technology, Stryker Leibinger GmbH & Co. KG, and supported by the Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau. It is endowed with a total of 10,000 euros. In addition, for the first time the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Southern Upper Rhine and the Freiburg Chamber of Crafts are donating two “special prizes” each worth € 3,000 for the areas of industry, commerce, trade and services as well as craft. Due to the coronavirus, the original application deadline has now been extended from January 31 to March 31, 2021.

With the award, the BioMed Freiburg Technology Foundation has been honoring the economic performance and inventiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the Freiburg economic region, i.e. from the Freiburg urban district and the two districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen, every two years since 1992.

Exemplary, original and innovative achievements in the development of new products, processes, services and business models are honored. Essential selection criteria for the award-worthiness are the degree of innovation, the market and future viability as well as the economic importance of the submitted competition entries. Only products, materials, processes, concepts or research results are included in the evaluation that are applicable in practice and marketable or that represent the viable basis for a future-oriented business model.

An independent jury will decide on the award of the prize. The application documents can be found online at www.freiburg.de/innovationspreis.

In addition to the city of Freiburg, the University of Freiburg, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of the Southern Upper Rhine, the Association of Industrial Companies Baden eV (WVIB), the Freiburg Chamber of Crafts and the Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau are all involved in the BioMed Freiburg Technology Foundation.

The last winners of the Freiburg Innovation Prize were the four Freiburg start-up and spin-off companies CorTec GmbH, dotscene GmbH, Glassomer GmbH and Mondas GmbH as well as the designer Christian Czapek from Staufen for his wheelchair bike, which can be divided into three segments.
