NEW YORK – As frontline workers continue to assist New York City in its fight against COVD-19, many are wondering how the city can help them.
To show its support for nurses working on the front lines, the Professional Staff Congress (PSC), which is a union of CUNY teachers and professional staff, partnered with the Nurses Union Association of the United States. New York State (NYSNA) to launch a PSC Homework Hotline last spring. This tool is a free initiative that provides virtual tutoring to the children of NYSNA’s frontline healthcare workers, and although the program was launched months ago, PSC has decided to continue the initiative.
“We called on our PSC members for volunteers to mentor the children of NYSNA nurses and the response from PSC was so overwhelming that we had to put together an online scheduling platform to accommodate families,” he said. PSC Treasurer Sharon Persinger.
More than 400 people have expressed interest in participating in the show so far, PSC communications director Fran Clark told our sister network NBC 4.
The program began to take shape due to the need to tutor children who were going to start their remote learning due to the COVID-19 health crisis. According to PSC, some children had difficulty coping with distance learning while parents worked long and grueling shifts in hospitals.
“I taught a wonderful girl, who was the daughter of a nurse. She was smart, curious, and interesting. I am sure that one day she will be a great young woman, ”said Inés Carrera, a Spanish tutor who offered her services twice a week for three months last spring, when the pandemic was at its peak in New York.
PSC volunteers only have to lend one or two hours a week by registering and specifying the available times and the subject that they would like to offer academic help.. Children on NYSNA first responders do not necessarily have to sign up to participate in the program for an extended period of time.
“It’s more of a necessity. If a child needs tutoring, they can come on site and schedule a time with a child,” said CUNY Assistant to the President for Research and Special Projects Ida Cheng.
Once the program organizers have a list of volunteer teachers, they will provide a link to the list for NYSNA members and their families. Students will then be able to sign up for a tutorial session on the desired topic whenever they need support.
Subject areas have been kept broad because the program anticipates that the majority of students applying for assistance will be in elementary or middle school. For now they have counseling in subjects like: math, English, science, social studies, Spanish, and possibly other languages.
Tutors will be able to communicate with the student via email, video conferencing, telephone conversation, or a combination that works best for each individual student.
