Outdoor cinema evenings

A series of free cinema evenings is taking place in the quarter of Tallinas Street in cooperation with the Riga International Short Film Festival “2 Annas”.

In the cinema evenings, every two weeks, different selections of «2 Annas» short films on topics currently relevant in society are shown. On Tuesday, August 9, at 9:30 p.m., the third free open-air cinema evening will take place, where visitors will be shown a selection of Baltic short films “Party Time”. It summarizes the nominated films of the “Time for the Ball” selection of the “Baltic Short Films” category of the 26th Riga International Short Film Festival “2 Annas”. The selection consists of three animated films: “Comeback” (director – Vladimir Leschiovs) is a story about father’s nostalgia, “Reunion” (director – Ulo Pikov) is about returning home, and “Face Recognition” (director – Martinus Klemet) – about avoidance from the police.

The program also includes two documentaries: “Šarmrīga” (director – Emīls Mihailovs), which is about the rhythms and melodies of Riga, as well as “Happiness is the Way” (director – Ivete Lucas) – a film about warehouse workers on the night before Christmas.

Two dramas will also be shown: “Curfew” (director – Elsa Gauja), where neighbors observe an illegal party during the pandemic, as well as “Locked up” (director – Umuts Vedats Gajretli) – a film about a woman locked in her lover’s apartment.

The selection also includes the road movie “Malduguns”, which tells about the way back to civilization.

On the other hand, the Dobele City House of Culture invites all cinema lovers to free open-air cinema screenings on the terrace of Pļavas Street on Friday, August 12 – from 18:00 to 23:55.

– At 6 p.m., the short film marathon will start. It will consist of short films by Latvian directors and animated films for every taste.

– At 8:20 p.m. – satirical comedy “The taste of water”, director – Matīss Kaža.

Katrīna (Iveta Pole) is a journalist who investigates a mysterious organization led by the widely popular Master (Vilis Daudziņš) together with his assistants Aldi (Andris Keišs, pictured) and Igor (Jānis Skutelis). When Katrína finds out about the schemes behind the Master’s association – “House of Water”, she decides to investigate it and inform the public about what is really happening behind the million-euro Master’s project, where people purify themselves with the power of specially structured water. However, Katrina learns that her daughter, who is convinced of the power of water, is also actively involved in the organization.

The work was shot in one continuous frame without editing and uses elements of both cinema and theater – similar to the comedy “Cinema and Us” by Matīs Kažas in 2020.

– At 22.20 – the first Latvian western «Wild East. Where will the road lead”, director – Matīss Kaža.

Eva is an aristocrat, a young woman who grew up under the guardianship of a White German baron. Shortly before the baron’s planned marriage of Eva to a peculiar Viennese count, Eva and her governess Magda decide to resist the baron’s plans and implement an escape plan. However, the Latvian farmer Mikus, who is suspected of kidnapping the young lady, unexpectedly gets involved in what is happening. The baron’s henchmen, a state criminal investigator, a Hungarian cowgirl and other heroes set out to find the missing young people, as Eva turns out to be the heiress to a great fortune.
