Free medical insemination will also be available in Spain for women without a partner and members of the LGBT + community

Spain will continue to offer free assisted medical care to non-partner women as well as members of the LGBT + community, according to EuroNews.

Spanish Health Minister Caroline Darius signed an order on Friday to give more women access to medical artificial insemination in the Spanish public health system.

The event has long been called for by LGBT + groups representing lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

This step is also part of the socialist-led Spanish government’s efforts to achieve equality. As is known, Spain has experienced a record number of women appointed to the Cabinet.

Fertility treatment is free in Spain, but six years ago the conservative People’s Party government restricted it to heterosexual women who have a partner. This, in turn, required the rest to be covered by private funds, but many Spanish regional offices refused to pursue such a policy.

The Spanish health minister signed the new order at a ceremony attended by activists, saying the move was aimed at ending discrimination in the public health system.

She said that this day marks “the restitution of rights – rights that should never have been denied”.

Uge Sangils, president of the Spanish Federation of LGBTQ + Rights Groups, welcomed the change, saying that it would change the lives of thousands of people in a positive direction.

“Let no one doubt that the expansion of reproductive rights expands human rights,” Sangils stressed.
