Grand Prix of the Angoulême Festival in 1992, Frank Margerin is the author of a work listed among the great classics of the Ninth Art (Lucien, Ricky, Momo the courier). First spotted for his drawing talents by Bernard Frankas, one of the four founders of Métal Hurlant magazine, he very quickly became the creator of the character of Lucien, rebel rocker wearing a banana, who won little little over the stories, until becoming the central character of his albums. Frank Margerin is vice-president of the Hippocampus Association and is committed to the social and professional integration of young people and adults with disabilities. As such, he is president of the jury for the Hippocampes d’or, a competition reserved for people with disabilities, created in 1998, the result of which was awarded to the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Note that the Grand Lucien at Angoulême station was restored in 2019.

Created in 2005 by Mireille Malot, The L’Hippocampe association has as main objective the development of cultural and artistic actions in favor of the social and professional integration of people with disabilities or their access to the arts and culture. In particular, it organizes each year the comic strip competition for young people and adults with disabilities as part of the Angoulême International Comic Book Festival, open to several European countries. The association L’Hippocampe, with the implementation of the comic strip competition L’Hippocampe d’or, aims to:

  • to shine a spotlight on the world of disability, in the highly publicized framework of the International Comic Book Festival of Angoulême
  • to foster the creative capacity of a singular public and to allow disabled people to express their sensitivity by engaging in an original and somewhat exceptional project
  • to allow their integration into the city and the recognition of their talent around the organization of exhibitions of award-winning comics
  • to ensure the sustainability of an action which is a real success with adults and young people with disabilities, families, educators and reception establishments

The association L’Hippocampe is also on the initiative of the creation in Angoulême of the Graphic Image-Arts ESAT to allow emerging talents of designers with disabilities to develop and offer them a fulfilling professional outlet:

  • Complete their often self-taught courses with a device allowing them to train by companionship
  • Integrate into a professional environment corresponding to their aspirations
  • Acquire autonomy in their personal and professional life

Establishment of ADAPEI Charente, l’ESAT Image – Graphic Arts provides comic strip communication services to companies and public bodies: illustration of communication documents, practical sheets, procedures, newsletters, brochures, etc. The ESAT Image-Graphic Arts welcomes 5 designers with disabilities integrated into the Atelier du Marquis. Fully integrated into this professional and friendly environment, the designers of the ESAT Image-Graphic Arts benefit from supervision, advice and support from these professional designers. In January 2020, the International City of Comics and Images became a partner of the Hippocampe.
