Two Romanian Villages Evacuated Following Russian Strike Near Border
BUCHAREST, Romania – Two Romanian villages, Plauru and Cazasu, are being evacuated after a fragment from a Russian missile struck Romanian territory during a recent attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure, Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tîlvăr announced Monday. The incident, occurring near the Danube River bordering Ukraine, prompted an emergency meeting of Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defense.
While initial reports suggested a missile had landed within Romania, subsequent examination determined a fragment from a Russian drone or missile – likely targeting ukrainian ports – was responsible for the impact. No casualties have been reported.
“I ordered the immediate start of procedures for the evacuation of residents from the area,” Tîlvăr stated. Approximately 260 residents from Plauru and cazasu are being relocated as a precautionary measure.
The incident marks the most significant incursion linked too the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to occur within Romanian territory.Romania, a NATO member, has consistently condemned Russia‘s aggression and increased its military presence in the region.
During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris on November 17, 2025, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized continued support for Ukraine. “The discussions we had showed it: we are ready. The work is progressing at full speed, and by Christmas we will have reached a new, decisive stage,” Macron said, referring to efforts to deter further Russian aggression.
Macron also highlighted the breadth of French assistance, stating,”Our support is not limited to the military field. It is also civil, economic and humanitarian.” He welcomed a new intergovernmental agreement strengthening bilateral cooperation and a 475 million euro contract between Alstom and Ukrainian Railways Company (UZ) for the supply of 55 locomotives, financed by the IBRD and the World Bank.
Macron reiterated a firm stance against appeasement, declaring, “We will also have discussions with President Zelensky to continue to create the conditions for a ceasefire and a just and lasting peace, along two lines of effort: strengthening support for Ukraine and strengthening pressure on Russia provided that it persists in its refusal of peace,” adding, ”Russia must not bank on the fatigue of Europeans.”
