France pays repair costs of million bicycles due to corona | NOW

France has paid for the repair costs of more than a million broken bicycles in the country. The French can request a contribution of 50 euros for the repair of their two-wheeler as part of the corona measures, because the government wants fewer people to use public transport.

The arrival of the grant was announced after the first lockdown in the spring. Due to the second lockdown, which was relaxed last weekend, the subsidy scheme will be extended until the end of March.

The government wants more people to use bicycles as a means of transport, says environment minister Barbara Pompili. Of the people who already made use of the subsidy scheme last year, about half used to barely use their bicycle before.

About three in a hundred French use their bicycle every day. The government hopes to triple this number so that fewer people use public transport. In practice, it turns out to be difficult to keep sufficient distance in metro trains, for example. Several cities created extra cycle paths because of the pandemic.

According to the French Cyclists’ Association, France has 25 to 40 million bicycles, of which about 15 million are in bad condition. The chairman described the subsidy scheme “as a great way to get old bicycles back on the road”, especially now that the demand for new bicycles has increased worldwide.
