The prevention of a complete embarrassment of the star ensemble from the Seine, which had gone into play against the new club of Jerome Boateng with the German national player Thilo Kehrer and without Boateng’s former world champion colleague Julian Draxler, was initiated by Neymar. The superstar, however, needed a penalty to equalize twelve minutes after Lyon’s lead by his Brazilian compatriot Lucas Paqueta (54th). Messi was substituted on ten minutes later. Messi’s substitute compatriot Mauro Icardi scored the home side’s winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Messi was only on the field for the previous Champions League finalist for the third time after his departure from FC Barcelona. Before the encounter with Bruges, the former world footballer had come into play in the 2-0 win of his new club in the league game at Stade Reims at the end of August 24 minutes before the final whistle.
The weekend was also somewhat more satisfactory for AS Monaco and its coach Niko Kovac. After three defeats in the previous four league games, the Monegasque came to a 2-2 (1-0) at undefeated neighbors OGC Nice. Goalkeeper Alexander Nübel, who is on loan to the Principality from Kovac’s ex-club and record champions Bayern Munich, missed his first clean slate in Ligue 1 on the sixth attempt.
While Nübel, who is already under criticism in Monaco after poor performance, continues to enjoy the trust of Kovac, national player Kevin Volland first took his place on the bench. The ex-Leverkusen player came on after just over an hour. U21 European champion Ismail Jakobs was not in the squad without giving reasons.
