Fourth federal execution in the US this year, more than the last 56 years combined

With the execution of a fourth death row inmate this year, the US federal government has now carried out more executions than in the 56 years before. Lezmond Mitchell, 38, was convicted of the murder of a 9-year-old and her grandmother. He was killed with an injection.

Mitchell’s execution is the fourth by the federal government this year. The other three were in July. Tomorrow the execution of another death row inmate, Keith Nelson, is planned.

Immediately following a Supreme Court decision, prisoner Daniel Lewis Lee was executed in July, the first federal execution since 2003. The court had consent given for the executions of four death row inmates, while a lower court had previously banned the executions.

Federal executions were rare for years. Some states continued to execute death row inmates in recent years, such as in Texas. The death penalty has been abolished in more than 20 American states.

Mitchell was the only Native American on death row by the US federal government. He was convicted along with an accomplice for the murder of the grandmother and granddaughter in 2001. The grandmother had offered them a ride. She was killed with 33 stabs. The girl was also murdered in a very violent way. Both bodies were mutilated.

Mitchell’s death penalty had been protested by Navajo Indian tribal leaders. They had called on President Trump to stop the execution because it would violate tribal culture and sovereignty.
