Four Surinamese ministers infected with corona | NOW

After Minister Diana Pokie of Land Policy and Forest Management previously tested positive for the virus, the corona virus was diagnosed at three other ministers on Thursday (local time), writes Star news.

These are David Abiamofo from Natural Resources, Reshma Kuldipsingh from Employment and Kenneth Amoksi from Justice. All ministers would have no symptoms, the government said. The entire government of the country is now being retested.

The news that Amoksi tested positive was announced during a meeting of the National Assembly (DNA), the Surinamese parliament. After the announcement, the minister was escorted out of the room and the meeting was suspended.

President Chan Santokhi was also present at the meeting. He stated to the Assembly members in attendance that Amoksi had tested negative before, but was later told that he had tested positive anyway.

Santokhi did not follow any rules

Earlier this week, Santokhi apologized in the newspaper The True Timebecause he had not complied with the corona rules. This emerged from photos of the president during an introductory tour in the West Surinamese district of Nickeree.

The photos showed that by no means all those present wore a mouth mask and kept a distance of 1.5 meters from each other. Santokhi has promised to improve. “We know that it is difficult. We in the government have also experienced moments in the past period when things have not gone quite as desired in terms of COVID-19 protocols”.
