Four Meteor Showers Color the December Sky

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The sky phenomenon throughout December 2021 will be colored four meteor Rain. The Phenicid meteor shower is currently taking place from November 28 to December 9.

At its peak on December 2, this meteor shower from the Phoenix constellation has varying meteor rates per hour. “Observers can see at least 12 meteors per hour during the peak night of the meteor shower,” said Avivah Yamani, activist astronomy in the Sky South Bandung community.

Phenicid meteor shower comes from the debris of comet D/1819 W1 (Blanpain) and can be observed from sunset until around 03.00 WIB. The best time to observe the peak of the Phoenicid meteor shower, said Avivah, is at 20.00 WIB when the point of the meteor’s arrival is at its highest point in the sky.

Next is the Puppid-Velids meteor shower from the Puppis constellation which takes place from December 1-15. From the Southern Sky site, the peak time of the meteor shower was on December 6 at a rate of 10 meteors per hour.

The Puppid-Velids meteor shower can only be observed after the Puppis constellation rises at 20.32 WIB until dawn. The best time for observation is at 03.00 WIB when the meteor’s direction point is at its highest point in the sky. The moon rising at midnight will be a major factor in natural light pollution.

The third meteor shower is the Geminids from the constellation Gemini, which takes place December 4-20. At its peak time of December 14, observers can expect 150 meteors per hour starting at 19:58 WIB. The Geminid meteor shower from the debris of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon travels at a speed of 35 kilometers per second.

The best time for observation is at 02.00 WIB when the meteor’s direction point is at its highest point in the sky. The moon will not be a disturbing factor because it only rises in the early morning at 04:49 WIB.

Finally, the Ursid meteor shower on December 17-26 from the constellation Ursa Minor. This means that only observers in the northern hemisphere or above the equator can enjoy the Ursid meteor trajectory. Observers in the southern hemisphere will miss watching because the constellations rise almost at the same time as the sun rises.
